Fargo's Take When Notre Dame hired head coach Charlie Weis last year, many habitancy were shaking their heads looking that he had no head coaching contact with the irregularity of a high school gig back in 1989. The naysayers are pretty quiet now since he has brought his winning ways to South Bend, a schedule that was in dire need of spark. Since winning the National Championship back in 1988, Notre Dame is currently in its longest drought without a title since, well, ever. That could all convert this season. Led by Heisman hopeful Brady Quinn, the Irish boast one of the most considerable offenses in the country. Defensively, the team needs to improve as there were plainly too many big plays allowed last season. The good news is that nine starters are back on defense to go along with the seven advent back on offense. Even though the Irish won't have the best defense in the country, it will greatly improve from last season based on contact alone. "Defense wins championships" is what the adage states but equilibrium is the key and Notre Dame will have that in 2006. Getting through the brutal schedule is an additional one story.

Returning Starters on Offense - 7 Quinn put up a narrative season at Notre Dame, throwing for 3,919 yards and 32 touchdowns while tossing just seven interceptions. Schedule As usual, the Irish will be playing one of the toughest schedules in the country but the good news is that there are just four true road games on the slate. One of those is the opener at Georgia Tech, a game that Notre Dame cannot look past. Following that are four level games against the Big Ten. Back-to-back home games against Penn St. And Michigan are truly tough tests followed by a revenge game at Michigan St. And then back home for a game against Purdue. Two more home contests effect against Pac Ten teams Stanford and Ucla. Up next is a trip to Baltimore to face Navy on a neutral field and then back home once again to take on North Carolina. Two of the final three games are on the road with the lone home game advent against Army. The season finale should be a excellent as the Irish trip to the Coliseum to face the Trojans.

You can bet on... If Notre Dame can come out of its first three games with a 3-0 record, it should be undefeated heading to Usc barring any upsets. Games against Michigan St., Purdue, Stanford and North Carolina were once easy but all four of these teams are going to be much great and all can beat the Irish if Notre Dame isn't careful. The Irish were a perfect 5-0 on the road last season and are now 14-8 Ats on the road since 2002. This includes a 9-4 Ats mark as a road dog and we aren't going to see that until the finale at Usc. Notre Dame has dropped eight home games level up and 11 against the whole over the last three years so it obviously needs to get the moxie back at Notre Dame Stadium. Expect to see a rematch of Ohio St. And Notre Dame in the Bcs Title Game on January 8th.

Of course I became a Red Wings fan instantly and then in 1971, a Montreal Canadiens fan as the Big M was traded again. Mahovlich won six Stanley Cups. Bobby Hull of the Black Hawks was most similar to Mahovlich with the slap shot and of course Boom Boom Geoffrion of the Canadiens perfected the slap shot and was the second player in Nhl history to score 50 goals in a season.

In 1968, the Nhl added the Pittsburg Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota North Stars, Los Angeles Kings, and the Oakland Seals. In 1970, dreams came true here in Buffalo, Ny as the Buffalo Sabres became members of the Nhl. In 1974 the Philadelphia Flyers became the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens then wheeled off four Stanley Cups in a row just to show who was in effect boss. The Canada Cup Series and the Olympics created some of the most games in history.

Today hockey has 30 teams. The lack of a major Tv covenant hold the sport back from gaining the popularity it deserves. If person delivered one of these "legal" checks in the old Nhl, they would pay dearly by getting punched out on several occasions. Goalies are allowed to skate and pass all over the place. I say if you step out of the crease with the puck, you are fair game. I like the two line pass rule.

Breakaways are fun to watch. Get rid of that crazy shootout. Let them go 5 minutes with 4 on 4 play, and then 3 on 3 play. A tie after that would not be a sin and should be allowed. I swear the Nhl leadership is listening to soccer moms instead of hockey moms. Stop the rink presentation aimed at children. Your marketing citizen are ruining the game. The light shows are cool, but the music is terrible. Make the old organ music mandatory. Let the Fans begin the cheers. Don't prod them on and on with pre-recorded junk. If your fans can't generate their own team cheers, then send them to a soccer game. Check out a Sabres-Leafs, Oilers-Flames, or Rangers-Islanders game. They don't need all that phony stuff to generate excitement.

One last note. If Tv fans can't see the puck it's because they have no idea what is going on in the game. It's not the visibility of the fast curious puck. Real hockey fans know where the darn puck is and ordinarily where it is going next. Let's take the hammers out and bang up the team bus. Let's get the most game back where it belongs - to the real hockey fans.

College Football Week 13 - 6 Top 25 Teams Upset on the Road, Bloom Comes Off of the Acc Title Game

Six Ap Top 25 teams can testify what a pain in the butt road games are - all were upset while college football's 13th week of play, and 2 of the 6 will be facing off in the Atlantic Coast seminar championship game this week.

The six teams with targets on their back included 7th-ranked Georgia Tech, 15th-ranked Clemson, 8th-ranked Pittsburgh, 11th-ranked Oklahoma State, 20th-ranked Mississippi and 23rd-ranked North Carolina. All but Pittsburgh were not just on-the-road, but also tackling an in-state rival.

Georgia (7-5) beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-2), 30-24, as the Bulldogs' Washaun Ealey rushed 20 times for 183 yards (9.15 yards per carry) and Caleb King rushed 18 times for 166 yards (9.22 ypc)-349 yards in the middle of them. Ealey and King sound like a comedy team but the Georgia Tech players were too busy sucking Louisiana pond water to laugh.

Georgia and its coach Mark Richt have taken their lumps this year with losses to Oklahoma State, Lsu, Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky, but few can match Richt's 9-year narrative against in-state rival Georgia Tech. West Virginia's defense stood tall, holding the Panthers out of the end zone on 5 Pittsburgh drives inside the Mountaineers' 30-yard line.

Oklahoma (7-5) took time out from its pedestrian season to remind Oklahoma State (9-3) who easily rules the Big 12 in Oklahoma by shutting out the Cowboys, 27-0. Wilson threw 4 Td passes in the game and Alan-Michael Cash blocked a field goal attempt with about 5 minutes left to seal the Tar Heels attempted comeback. The win was the Wolfpack's 3rd level against the in-state rival North Carolina Tar Heels.

Four other Top 25 teams didn't miss a beat while beating in-state rivals in away games.

No. 2-ranked Alabama (12-0) remained unbeaten by sliding by Auburn (7-5), 26-21. No. 3-ranked Texas (12-0) remained unbeaten by outlasting Texas A&M (6-6), 49-39. No. 14-ranked Virginia Tech (9-3) slammed Virginia (3-9), 42-13; and No. 19th-ranked Miami Florida (9-3) put down South Florida (7-4), 31-10.

Eight other Top 25 teams won home games, and 4 of the 8 won against in-state rivals as well-Florida, Brigham Young, Southern California and Houston.

No. 1-ranked Florida (12-0) remained unbeaten by pounding Florida State (6-6), 37-10, as the Gators' Tim Tebow threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for 2 more. The victories by unbeaten Florida and Alabama sets up a clash for the Sec title game this Saturday, and the winner earns the right to play in the final season-ending game for the National Championship.

No. 18-ranked Brigham Young (10-2) turned back No. 22-ranked Utah (now 9-3), 26-23, as senior quarterback Max Hall found Andrew George with a 25-yard Td pass in overtime. The win by the Cougars was their 3rd in 4 years over the uppity Utah Utes, who intercepted Hall 5 times last year in a 48-24 blowout on their home field.

Max Hall sought revenge and redemption, and created adequate smack talk after Byu's win to fill a bulletin board in Utah's Salt Lake City locker room. Here is Mad Max on the Utah Utes:

No. 24-ranked Southern Cal (8-3) beat Ucla (6-6), 28-7; and No. 25-ranked Houston (10-2) just decimated Rice (2-10), 73-14, as Case Kellum passed for 323 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for someone else score. The Houston Cougars have the top-scoring offense in the nation, racking up an average of 45 points a game.

No. 4-ranked Texas Christian (12-0) remained unbeaten at home by whipping New Mexico (1-11), 51-10, as Andy Dalton matched a career-high 4 Td passes with two of them to Antoine Hicks in a 12-second span. The win wrapped up Tcu's first undefeated quarterly season in 71 years-that is a long time in the middle of rains in the dusty Texas desert.

Two more unranked teams became bowl eligible. Wyoming (6-6) just slipped by Colorado State (3-9), 17-16, and Connecticut (6-6) easily beat Syracuse (4-8), 56-31.

There were two candidates for the no-defense game of the week. Stanford (8-4) nipped Notre Dame (6-6), 45-38. Stanford is 65th nationally in scoring defense and Notre Dame is 64th. Utah State (4-8) upset Idaho (7-5), 52-49. Utah State is ranked 107th nationally in scoring defense and Idaho 111th.

There is no telling how many more games the Idaho Vandals would have won with a decent defense, their offense had no problem putting up points as they ranked 23rd in scoring offense.

Central Michigan (10-2) won its 10th game of the season by beating Northern Illinois (7-5), 45-31. Ohio (9-3) handed Temple (9-3) its first loss after 9 level victories, beating the Owls 35-17.

In the abbreviation game of the week, Ucf (8-4) beat Uab (5-7) by a touchdown, 34-27. It reminded one of the old George Carlin comedic habit where as a sportscaster he says, "And now for some scores... 5-2, 6-5, 7-3, 2-1 and in a shutout, 1-0." If you are wondering, that was the University of Central Florida over the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Southern Methodist (7-5) continues to get better with a 26-21 against Tulane (3-9). Smu led 20-14 after 3 quarters and then did what many teams cannot do, close out the win without screwing it up.

Navy (now 8-4) traveled to Hawaii (6-6) and at once made the Warriors bowl eligible by losing, 24-17. There is an unconfirmed rumor that the Samoan section of the Warriors, after a 17-17 tie at halftime, ate more coconuts while halftime, thus refueling to hold the Midshipmen scoreless in the second half.

One more game was worth noting. Washington (4-7) shut out in-state rival Washington State (1-11), 30-0, in the Apple Cup. The Huskies began the season by losing by 8 points to 11th-ranked Lsu, then beat Idaho, upset 3rd-ranked Southern California, lost away games to Stanford and Notre Dame, upset Arizona, then suffered 4 more defeats before blanking the Washington State Cougars.

The game was needful for any reasons:

Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario in 1861 and was educated at McGill University in Montreal where he later served as its athletic director. In 1890, he moved to America and taught corporeal study at Springfield College (then called the Young Men's Christian relationship Training School) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

During his stint there, he tried to find distinct ways to keep rowdy students occupied and fit during the harsh New England winter. Firstly, he analyzed the most favorite games of those times (rugby, lacrosse, soccer, football, hockey and baseball); Naismith noticed the hazards of a small fast ball and closed that the big soft soccer ball was safest. Secondly, he saw that most corporeal sense occurred while running with the ball, dribbling or hitting it so he decided that passing was the only legal option," according to the editors of Wikipedia.

Naismith wanted to get away from the game being a full-contact sport so he raised the goal up above the players' heads thus eliminating the need for a guard. He also required the players to lob the ball - much like the duck game - in order to score points. Finally, he placed on 13 basic rules to play the game.

The first basketball game was played in December 1891 and was distinct from the sport we know today. Each team had nine members, a soccer ball was used and peach baskets affixed to ten-foot high railings served as the goals,

The baskets retained their lowest parts so the ball had to be removed every time a flourishing shot was made. Later, holes were drilled in the baskets so the ball could be retrieved with a long cylindrical rod. Players didn't dribble the ball at that time; they ran with it and tossed it over their heads to pass it to other players.

In 1893, Naismith replaced the peach baskets with metal hoops that had hammock-style baskets. But ten years passed before open-ended nets that allowed the ball to pass straight through were used.

What felt like an eternity in that parking lot was precisely in retrospect only a second when he screamed, "I went stinky on the potty" and without hesitation there came from the bays in that stable a unifying resounding male cheer from under cars and behind hoods. It was no less enthusiastic than had he just scored the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. "Way to go," they cried. "Good job," they screamed as the air filled with waving wrenches and power drills. And my son beamed as his most heroes in the whole world stopped what they were doing to identify his accomplishment. I still hear horror stories about how a high school coach has tried to ruin a high school athlete's athletic career. Believe it or not, there are high school coaches that will not do whatever to help their own players get recruited for college. There are situations where high school coaches have put out misleading information about one of their own athletes to college recruiters with the intent to destroy the trainee athlete's chances of being recruited at all. It's sad to think that this kind of thing is still goes on and my writing this article about it I can't believe it's still happening. High school players have been messed over so much for years at the hands of high school coaches.

Here are some things that I have heard and/or had to fix during my years in the firm of college recruiting:

High school coaches have held back recruiting letters that come to the schools for a inevitable player from a college program. What I mean is that the player or players have no idea that a college agenda has an interest in them because that player did not get the recruiting letters. Sad, but true and many high school coaches feel that they are helping the players by holding back these recruiting letters.

What I did with my recruiting service to fix this problem was to provide the trainee athlete's home address and phone whole in any information that was sent to a college program. That way, the college coaches who were doing the recruiting could just mail letters right to the trainee athlete's home without going straight through the high school.

A very good high school basketball player from Ohio some years ago was told by the school administrators not to take the Sat test!

Now we all know that without this test score, there is no way the trainee athlete or any athlete could get into college. Their goal was to make sure that the trainee athlete did not get into college. To this day, I still don't understand why that high school would do that. But what I did was call the school on that person's profit and, with the okay from his parents, find out what the hell was the problem! I mean this high school basketball player was 6'9 and no one was recruiting him because he had no test scores! The school administrators said that they did not think he wanted to go to college! They must have been blind! I guess they did not see a 6'9 basketball player who had talent to play in a college program! Well, I got the school straightened out and got this very good basketball player into college and now he's playing basketball overseas.

When I was an up and arrival high school basketball player, the team that I played on had many good players but the coach, at that time, did very miniature with recruiting. I shouldn't even call him a coach because of what he didn't do with recruiting!

Now the summer before my senior year in high school the same players that were on my high school team won the summer league championships. We beat the same teams and players that we faced the season before and that we would face my senior season. Why did we do so well? It was the coaching. We had a distinct coach that summer that cared about the players on the team and we wanted this man to coach us during the high school basketball season during our senior year.

Sad to say that it did not happen and we had someone else losing season and the coach who had coached this team for 3 seasons, quit at seasons end. Because of the pressure from many parents, he did nothing to build a basketball team and he did even less when it came to recruiting.

The many millions of high football players out there who have dreams of playing in college have had those same dreams crushed when the coach whether quits or is fired at seasons end. What happens to the players who need their coach to help them get recruited for college? Who helps these players? In most situations, these football players are left with no help and sometimes these trainee athletes ends up whether not going to college, junior college or they go to college but not to play football and sometimes their football vocation ends. Football season begins at the start of the school year and is over by December so there are many things still to do when it comes to recruiting but if there is no coach, the players are screwed.

Now for years and years high school trainee athletes have been messed over by a lot of high school coaches and the word has gotten around for years of what high school coaches have done to a lot of talented high school trainee athletes for years and years.
Parents are now taking matters into their own hands. In today's time with the power of the internet and college recruiting services. Parents now have options that were not available to them many years ago. They are not totally leaving it up to the high school coaches to help their kids get recruited for college.

These parents are using many other resources in order to help their kids achieve greater opportunities in the world of college recruiting. With the explosion of the Internet, more and more parents can do their own recruiting. These days, there is more entrance to a lot of information on recruiting. You can now email college programs, make phones and article and distribute your own Dvd's. Technology has allowed many parents to do more than ever. I think the days of totally leaving it up to high school coaches to help students get recruited for college is over. Well, not totally. Keep in mind, to do your own college recruiting is time inviting and does bring inevitable challenges. Therefore, the need for college recruiting services is key-if you can find the right one.

In my years as a college recruiter I have seen and herd it all.

Many schools fire their coaches because of bad team standings. There are also those who name their stadiums and fields after the coaches as a sign of gratitude.

Sports recognize the coaches at large. When the West Virginia Mountaineers received the Lambert-Meadowland trophy, the records did not list the names of athletes who were part of the team. They listed the name of the head coach instead.

Coaches also receive prestige for the doing of their players. Experts would say that the great coaches bring out the best from their players. Talent alone is not enough to win games. It takes advice and motivation as well.

Going back to the football team of the West Virginia University, Coach Don Nehlen is among the best. His induction in the College football Hall of Fame proved his greatness. Before becoming one of the best coaches, he was a quarterback at the Bowling Green State University. After that, he coached the Bowling Green.

He then coached the West Virginia for 20 years, from 1980 to 2000. He received various awards that recognized him as one of the top coaches around. In 1988, he received three distinctions, the Afca Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, and Walter Camp Coach of the Year awards. During his leadership, he led the Mountaineers to the 1993 Big East seminar championship. In that same year, he became the Big East Coach of the Year and Kodak Coach of the Year.

When Nehlen retired, Coach Rich Rodriguez replaced him. No one would be more fitting to do the job since he has been assisting Coach Nehlen in 1985 and 1986. He led the team to four Big East seminar championships, along with three consecutive titles in 2003, 2004, and 2005. During these years, he also received the Big East Coach of the Year award. After they won the Big East seminar in 2005, they won the Nokia Sugar Bowl, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs.

Although Rodriguez left the West Virginia Mountaineers after the 2007 season, he is still one of the best coaches the team has ever had.

These two coaches have led the West Virginia University football team to greatness. This reinforces the value of coaches in the doing of their teams. Although the players are principal to the team, the coaches lead the team.

While there were a estimate of scares this past weekend, the highest-ranked team in the Bcs standings to lose was No. 14 Oregon (34-23 at Washington State). The most recent standings saw Ohio State contend its place at the top but also saw Michigan move past Usc into the No. 2 position. For Usc, it's the first time the Trojans have not been either No. 1 or No. 2 in the Bcs since the final standings of the 2003 regular season.

People may just remember that caused quite a stir, as the Trojans were ranked No. 1 in both the Ap and Coaches' poll that season but finished just No. 3 in the Bcs and got left out of the 2003 Bcs championship game that year. Lsu went on to beat Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl (14-7) claiming the Bcs title, while Usc beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl (28-14) to claim the Ap title.

Michigan's rise to No.2 in the Bcs standings gives the Big 10 the nation's top-two teams. The last time a seminar held the top-two spots in the Bcs standings was October 27, 2001 when Nebraska was No. 1 and Oklahoma was No.2. Not for nothing, but neither Nebraska nor Oklahoma won the Bcs title that season, Miami-Florida did!

Conventional wisdom (never very accurate, by the way) says the winner of the Michigan/Ohio State game on November 18 will meet an undefeated Usc team in this year's national title game. However, it's hard to argue with that logic, as it seems extremely unlikely Ohio State or Michigan will lose before their showdown. Also, after watching Oregon lose (see above score), Cal struggle to beat Washington in Ot and Notre Dame edge Ucla in the game's final 30 seconds this past weekend, Usc seems just as unlikely to lose at home (Trojans have won 30 right in the Coliseum) in a three-game November stretch against the Ducks, Bears and Irish.

The gap in the middle of the nation's top three teams in the Bcs standings is huge, as 4th-place West Virginia is .1879 behind No. 3 Usc. West Va and Louisville (which meet in Louisville November 2), will both need help to reach the No. 2 spot, even assuming the winner of that game stays undefeated. If Auburn and Florida both stay unbeaten until a Sec championship meeting on December 2 (Auburn beat Florida 27-17 October 14), the winner may also have a shot at reaching No. 2 in the Bcs standings, but like the West Va/Louisville winner, they'll need help.

Cfb's Week 9 gets underway with an perfect matchup on Thursday night, as No. 10 Clemson (1st top-10 ranking in the Ap since 2000) visits Blacksburg to take on Va Tech. Clemson, the nation's top-scoring team at 42.3 Ppg will face a Hokies team that's already lost two games this year, including a Thursday night visit to Boston College (22-3). That loss ended an 11-game Va Tech winning streak in Thursday night games, in which Frank Beamer's team had gone 10-1 Ats. Clemson, fresh off a 31-7 win over Ga Tech last Saturday night (held Calvin Johnson without a catch for the first time in his career), is favored by 4 1/2 points. While this is a "down-year" for Va Tech, it should also be noted that the Hokies have been home 'dogs' just three times since 1995 (all against Miami-Florida), winning outright twice, while outside all three!

Seven teams remain unbeaten in department I-A, entering this final weekend of October (Boise State, Louisville, Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers, Usc and West Va). All but Usc played last week and the teams went a collective 4-2 Ats (Boise and Louisville didn't cover), giving them a very-profitable collective Ats mark of 31-16-1. However, none of the above schools can claim what 5-3 Central Michigan or 7-1 Wisconsin can. The Chippewas may have three losses but they are also 7-0-1 Ats, while the Badgers enter the weekend 6-0-1 Ats! For the record, Central Michigan is off this weekend while Wisconsin hosts Illinois (Badgers are favored by 21 1/2).

Ohio State owns the nation's longest active winning streak with 15 right victories (14-1 Ats!) and will play its Homecoming game on Saturday, fascinating Minnesota. fascinating may just be the right record too, as the Buckeyes are 31-2 Su vs the Golden Gophers since 1969. Ohio State is favored by 27 points. As for West Va, the Mountaineers are getting ready for their "showdown game" next Thursday night in Louisville, against the Cardinals.

The three-longest home winning streaks belong to Usc (30), Louisville (15) and Florida. However, Usc is on the road at Oregon State, Louisville is off and Florida is "cocktailing" in Jacksonville with Georgia. However, the Trojans also own the nation's longest active road winning streak as well (18 right / 10-8 Ats) and are favored by 10 1/2 points in Corvallis, in an attempt to extend that mark to 19 in a row. Texas, which escaped Lincoln with a 22-20 win last Saturday, will put its 14-game road winning streak (9-5 Ats) on the line in Lubbock (Texas Tech) on Saturday, where the Longhorns are also favored by 10 1/2 points over the Red Raiders.

After wins by Eastern Michigan (17-13 over Toledo) and San Diego State (19-12 over Air Force) last Saturday, there remains just four winless schools in department I-A. The list includes Duke and Florida International (both 0-7), as well as Stanford and Temple (both 0-8). However, all but Stanford (which is 1-7 Ats), have done Ok vs the pointspread. Duke is 3-3, Florida International 3-3-1 and Temple 3-4-1. Last week was typical for the Owls, as they fell behind 40-0 at Northern Illinois, but "came back" to lose, 43-21 and cover the 32-point spread.

Temple owns the nation's longest active losing streak at 20 right losses, but is a much more respectable 8-11-1 Ats. The Owls' 19-game road losing streak is also 'tops,' but like their total Ats mark, the Owls come in at a respectable 9-9-1 Ats on the road. Temple plays at home this week and here's a shock, Temple's eight-game home winning streak (but 4-4 Ats) ties Duke for the nation's longest. It's Homecoming for the Owls this week and they are home underdogs of 19 points to the 4-4 Falcons of Bowling Green.

Speaking of Duke, the Blue Devils played hard last Saturday vs a suspension-riddled Miami-Florida team, losing at home 20-15. The loss was Duke's 15th in a row total (5-9 Ats), as well as its eighth right at home (1-6 Ats). The Blue Devils are at home again this Saturday, as they host Vanderbilt. Vandy is favored by 8 1/2 points. Stanford's 10-game losing streak (2-8 Ats) is the nation's third-longest active losing streak but the Cardinal luckily have the week off.

San Jose State owns the nation's second-longest road losing streak (behind Temple's 19-game streak) at 15 right losses but the Spartans are home this weekend. Duke's lost 14 in a row on the road (9-5 Ats!) but is also at home (see above). Unlv will be on the road this week (at Utah) and the Rebels have dropped 13 right road games (2-11 Ats) after losing 52-7 last Saturday at Byu. Saturday, the Rebels are 20-point underdogs in Salt Lake City.

While both Fresno State and North Carolina have each won once in 2006, neither school has yet to post an Ats win! North Carolina's lone Su win came back on September 16 over I-Aa Furman 45-42 in a non-lined game, while Fresno State opened the 2006 season with a 28-19 win (Bulldogs were 12 1/2-point favorites) over Nevada on September 1. Beginning with the Bulldogs' near-upset at Usc last November 19 (lost 50-42), they are 1-10 Su and are 1-9-1 Ats after getting a 'push' at Lsu last Saturday (lost 38-6 as 32-point dogs). The Spartans moved past Bowling Green 28-17 in a not-so-impressive home victory, giving Dantonio other win. So far, Dantonio is undefeated at Michigan State. Next up: Pittsburgh comes to town. The Sun Devils took apart Colorado 33-14, giving Erickson other win. So far, Erickson is undefeated at Arizona State. Next up: San Diego State comes to town. Can Erickson go 3-0? Absolutely. They topped New Mexico State 49-30 two weeks ago, which was on the heels of a stunning 68-37 win at Fresno. Hawaii is 5-0-1 Ats this season because of that explosive offense. Hawaii is also 12-5 Ats its last 17 home games.

Bobby Petrino (Louisville): Other brilliant educator and obnoxious mind. The Cardinals median 43 points and over 210 yards rushing and passing! About 16 years ago I started coaching youth football as an assistant coach on an age 8-10 expansion team. Like most expansion teams with all rookie players and rookie coaches, we struggled that first year. We knew we were going to struggle from the start, as most expansion teams in the league normally lost every game. Our head coach was a very well respected Real Estate administrative with the largest firm in the state. He had given presentations to large crowds and had dozens of direct reports, a pretty savvy guy. Our first game our players were nervous as you might expect with all first year players. Before the game I saw the Head Coach kind of doubled over near the sidelines with a grimace on his face and a near greenish color hue on his mug. I asked him if he was sick, he said his stomach was killing him and he was nauseous. I asked him if he had been sick this week, he replied no, that it was the game that was development his stomach cramp and development him nauseous. This grown man, a big shot was letting a youth football game get to him.

The head coach leads by example, the players are always taking their cues from him and our head coach was nervous and sick before our first game. This was a time when our kids were feeling the same emotions, needless to say we got blown out that day. Our coach was so wrapped up in how the team would do, he made himself sick that day and it hurt his teams carrying out and enjoyment of the game.

Another youth football coach I know of as a matter of fact is so emotional before his games that he goes off in his car, sits in a park and cries before the games to let all his emotions out. Obviously this guy may need some type of pro help and I wouldn't let a guy like that coach with me, but many youth football coaches let their emotions get the best of them.

While it's normal to feel some angst before games, if you're development yourself sick or are overly emotional before games you are taking this far too seriously. Do some of us get up in the morning and on the way to work think about football plays to run or ways to enhance our youth football teams? Yes. Do many of us put a lot of time and effort into our teams and improving as coaches? Sure. But thinking about youth football and development yourself a better coach have microscopic to do with letting your emotions get the best of you before a game.

We all want our teams to do well and that the kids have a great experience, but life isn't going to turn dramatically and the earth won't stop spinning if you don't coach the excellent game. If you put the time in and learn from others and your own experiences and are a good football coach. Your teams will finally play well. Over time if your teams are well coached and they play well, the wins will take care of themselves. As a head football coach all you can control is your teams making ready and the schemes and adjustments, you can't control the weather, the refs or the other teams performance.

Does this mean you are obsolved if your youth football team loses? No, it means you are in control of what you can control and as long as your team executes and plays well, that's all you can hope for. In the end, playing well normally equates to winning games, but fretting over it accomplishes nothing and as a matter of fact hurts your teams performance. If the kids see you aren't enjoying the experience, they aren't going to enjoy it either and a team without smiles on their faces is a team that plays poorly.

Don't forget to get a good meal in you before the game and bring some Gatorade for yourself as well. I pray on my way to games or in the morning of the game request God for wisdom, patience and for me to have a long term focus on my actions. I also ask that God may be glorified by my actions and the actions of my team that day. I'm not sure God takes sides in youth football games, I never pray to win, but I do pray that all my kids show up and that no one from either team is injured that day. For those not so inclined, maybe looking at how you will be remembered 10 years after the game is concluded is a good perspective to take on guiding your actions for the day. Of course I'm also reviewing in my mind my game plan, keys adjustments and substitution plans for the day as well.

For most of us the level of pain in any task is inversely linked to how well we have prepared ourselves for for the task. The first few communal clinics I did I was pretty nervous, I had never done any large clinics before strangers and the presentations were with new material. ( Kind of like having a new team or playing your first game) I had not had time to custom the presentations or gotten feedback as to where there would be added questions or even if the presentations would be well received ( Kind of like not doing lots of fit and freeze reps or even having a scrimmage). As you would expect, the first few clinics were Ok but they could have been much better. Now I always custom the presentations live and now even in front of crowds of 190 skeptical youth football coaches in Boston, I'm cool and confident.

As this relates to your youth football team, the better your team is prepared the less nervous you will be. The more standard you have prepared yourself and your youth football team, the less nervous you will be. Easy enough to say, hard to do for some. either way, once you've put in the effort into yourself and your team, you have to tell yourself that's all you can do. "There is comfort in knowing you have given all you have". In the end you just have to let the game play out and see the results. If you've done the investigate and put the time in, like any other Endeavour, you're probably going to be a victorious youth football coach.

Even at our first game, our football plays look crisp, our alignments are perfect, we always have 11 on the field, we block and tackle well, we even go in motion well and are seldom penalized. We are able to do this because of our wise use of custom time, our integrated schemes and the progression nature of the teaching methods we use to organize our teams. We have been told many times by our opponents that our kids seem to be pretty carefree and very confident. My thoughts are we appear so because we are, the kids know they are prepared to play that first game. Our coaches are all calm, cool and certain before the games because as we all know, the kids are all taking their cues from us, that calm demeanor is part of coaching youth football well. If your coaches are fretting and worried, the kids will be too. Even if deep inside you aren't certain any of your football plays will even work that day, you need to appear so on the covering for your youth football players and your team.

Usc Trojans: For as good as the Pac 10 has gotten over the years the seminar still belongs to the Trojans. Arizona St. Sun Devils: Dennis Erickson took over the program and they surprised the country jumping as high as six in the rankings. Superstar Qb Rudy Carpenter returns as a senior and the team looks poised to make an additional one good run this year. With an improved pass rush on defense if the Sun Devils can safe Carpenter then they will have some big wins. They must prove they can play well against good teams as that was their down fall last year. Projected Finish: Second in the Pac 10; 9-3

Oregon St. Beavers: The next any teams in the seminar should be in a dog fight for third. By practically default we will list the beavers in this spot. Mike Riley will have to do a lot of work as the beavers lost their foremost rusher and the whole front seven on defense. Senior Sammie Stroughter is back after an injury and will be the playmaker on offense they need, but a few primary losses could throw the beavers from third to sixth in a hurry. Projected Finish: Third in the Pac 10; 8-4

California Bears: This is a make or break season for Cal. They could potentially plummet to the basement or surprise some population and jump up the rankings. They will have to replace a lot of players to show promise and have a Qb controversy brewing. Led by Jahvid Best in the backfield Cal has possible play makers at practically every position. The defense will be solid enough but the key is at Qb, if that works out the Bears can surprise. Projected Finish: Fifth in the Pac 10; 7-5

Arizona Wildcats: Many experts don't have many hopes for the Wildcats but I think they will be the escape team of the Pac 10 this year. Mike Stoops is on the proverbial hot seat and will be qualified with a returning offense that can get him the wins they need. Willie Tuitama is back at the helm for the cats and brings back most of his offense. The key will be how Stoops works his offense with 8 new starters. The good news is that is his specialty and with a soft program the cats will surprise. Projected Finish: Sixth in the Pac 10.

My specialty seminar is back for the 15th year in a row in the handicapping business. Going 66% Ats in 2005 in the Big 12 wide in football, and 68% with Big 12 Bowl teams last year, specialization is truly to the key to success. With a 63% lifetime Ats record in this conference, I look for numerous opportunities again in 2006 from this conference. First up, my Big 12 North report, where my beloved Huskers (I am from Lincoln, Ne), look to accumulate their national stature as in years past as the transition duration with ex-Raider head coach Bill Callahan is now unblemished and many pieces to the puzzle are filled in for Nebraska, along with a come from behind Alamo Bowl win last year in dramatic fashion over Big 10 powerhouse Michigan. Some changes are in the wind in the Big 12 North with Bill Snyder out at Kansas State and Gary Barnett gone at Colorado, which was long overdue. Lets rank it and break it down for 2006, from first to worst in the Big 12 North.
Nebraska Cornhuskers

A return to national prominence is in order for Nebraska as Bill Callahan's West Coast offense is settling in at Nebraska, as evidenced by a national ranking of 107th, an unheard of amount for the Nebraska rushing record charts, as the Huskers load option offense is long gone and the passing game, led by all world Qb Zac Taylor, who set numerous school records in passing in 2005, is at the forefront again in 2006. Passing for over 2600 yards in 2005, weathering 38 sacks, Zac Taylor is the Key for Nebraska in 2006, and he is a cool customer in the pocket, and this guy is a gamer and leader with sense under his belt, and a monster bowl win too boot. wide Nebraska returns many starters as well on defense, which led the nation in Qb sacks in 2005, with possible All-American Adam Carriker at end leading the way.

On offense the ask mark is running back, as 3 year starter Cory Ross is gone and it looks like running back by committee for the Huskers with young talent in the wings as I look for both Cody Glenn (power back) and Marlon Lucky (speed back) to excel with Brandon Jackson as a utility back, and all 3 can catch the ball out of the backfield. Getting previous All-Big 12 first teamer Matt Herrian back at tight end is a Huge plus for Nebraska here, off a year out with a knee injury, and there are abundance of young receivers out there and some upcoming talent to add depth to this position, Nate Swift being the go to guy again this year along with Terrance Nunn. The nasty line is solid and deep led by center Kurt Mann, and improved play here is crucial as they allowed 38 sacks in 2005. Expect this team to average 25-28 ppg on offense this year. They could be explosive and Callahan takes chances to make big plays, so I expect this unit to be great than ever under this principles in 2006.

On defense look for a stiff unit this year. The potential to rush the passer and some good defensive back play led by Zach Bowman, the Huskers return the 10th best defense against the pass last year in full power and the linebackers are deep are solid. With a solid pass rush and a great Lb unit, and the potential to rush the passer, this unit will be the strong point of the Huskers and allow the offense a short field more times than not. With solid extra teams and excellent speed with return guys, the Huskers are a unblemished team with confidence in 2006. Scheduling is a qoute as the Huskers are the only team in the Usa to play both teams, Texas and Usc, from the Bcs Championship game in 2005. Traveling to Usc will be tough for their 3rd game of the season and their first road trip, but they do get Texas in Lincoln later in the season so that will be a huge showdown and possible Big 12 championship game preview. A tough road test at pesky Iowa State is also a concern and will be a big game for Nebraska. If they can go 2-1 somehow in those 3 games, beating Iowa State on the road, look for a sweep of the Big 12 North, a 2 to 3 loss season with a major bowl bid in 2006. Not a national title contender next, but a force out of the Big 12 for sure in 2006.

Iowa State

This is a tough call with Kansas seeing to have a good year, but Qb Brett Meyer is at the helm for the Cyclones, and he is a talented and perilous guy, who will make big plays and win games for the Cyclones in 2006. Iowa State returns 9 players from a productive offense, which will be the power of this team, and only 4 starters return on defense, which is a huge concern in Ames this season. They ended the season with a loss to Tcu in the Houston Bowl and had losses at Kansas and Nebraska last year on the road, both in overtime, and losing to Baylor in Ames was embarrassing to say the least.

On offense, this team is as good as any in the Big 12 North, and maybe the Big 12, with Qb Meyer being a talented and versatile player, who can also scramble with the best of them. A talented Wr unit led by all-Big 12 performer Todd Blythe, and a running game headed up by Rb Steven Hicks, this unit will yield Only if Barney Cotton, nasty coordinator, cuts loose Qb Meyers and lets him roam. In any sense of the word, this is a dual threat unit, with a deep nasty line and talent at every skill position, and they will put up some points and have quick assault capability. Look for Brett Meyers to have a standout season as a senior this season, he is a dissimilarity maker.

The defense is a major concern here with only 4 starters remaining from last years unit, and pass defense is a serious ask mark, and all 3 linebackers are first year starters, and all but 1 in the secondary graduated, but DeAndre Jackson is a stud in man-to-man coverage. All in all there will be a learning curve and some inexperience here, but the offense is noteworthy adequate to make up some lost ground, and I expect a ton of high scoring games when the Cyclones play this year, so look to the Totals Play with these guys, especially in the low 40's number. Beating Iowa last year 23-3, and now having to play them in Iowa City will be a true test for the Hawkeye's who always give their in-state rivals trouble, but a trip the Texas the following week will be a brutal early season road stretch. They get Nebraska, Texas Tech and Kansas all at home this year as well as Missouri to end the season, so a 3 loss season is not out of the ask for Iowa State and they should maintain with Nebraska and for the top spot, and having Kansas, who will be a contender, at home avenging a Ot loss last year is also a plus. A 9-3 or 8-4 season and a bowl bid for the Cyclones is on tap.

Kansas

Many think this is the year of the Jayhawks, as they made Huge strides in 2005, beating both Iowa State and Nebraska along with hated rival Missouri in 2005, with lesser talent than they have now, but the revenge factor in the Big 12 is huge and all 3 of those games will be played on the road, and I do not see Ku winning any of them, although Missouri is guess and always the biggest game of the year for Ku. Advent off a Ft. Worth Bowl win, blowing out Houston 42-13 was huge boost to Mark Mangino's squad and they look to build on last season's success with only 9 returning starters, which is my biggest concern wide with Kansas, and that is depth and talent at skill positions. A rash of injuries would devastate this team, which is why I have them in 3rd place overall.

On offense the Qb position has been announced and after a great spring game, Kerry Meier is the man. He is a scrambler and has a strong and spoton arm, with abundance of depth behind him at Qb as well if he falls to injury. Jon Cornish is touted as a 1000 yard back this season and behind a great than average nasty line, and with the threat of a vertical passing game, they should be consistent on the ground. As mentioned, the nasty line is soiled with all 5 starters returning. The key is the passing game, a good Qb but no one to throw to, but Te Derek Fine was the go to guy in the spring game, which I was gift at, and he will be a huge part of their offense, especially in key 3rd down situations. Not an explosive team on offense, but they should be able to grind it out and mix it up, and with some good Qb play, will make some strides.

On defense this team was awesome in 2005, and then they lose 7 starters from a unit that was hard to run against and did not give up big plays all season with the exception of Texas. Having to replace all 3 starters at linebacker and having only 1 returner in the secondary playing the type of teams they have to this season, especially on the road at Nebraska and Iowa State is a huge concern, and I look for them to get lit up by good throwing teams this season, so stick that in your record holding book. They have solid extra teams and momentum Advent into 2006 and Mark Mangino is one of the most underrated coaches in the Big 12, many remember him as the nasty coordinator for Oklahoma when they won their first national title under Bob Stoops. Look for a respectable season with 4 to 5 losses and some tight games, these guys will be a perilous underdog, especially with some big numbers their way.

Missouri

A tight call between the bottom 3 in the North, but out of K-State and Colorado, both of which have new coaches and systems, I'll lean towards Gary Pinkel's Tiger squad to remain tough in 2006, despite losing all world Qb Brad Smith, who was about 75% of the offense for Missouri for the past 3 years. Some depth on offense and some tough games at home, along with some excellent coaching has me liking Missouri this year as a spoiler late in the season.

On offense the Qb position goes to Chase Daniel, a solid player and replacement for Brad Smith. He has some mobility and can run the spread option offense to a great degree, although his 6'0" size is a concern if he takes too many shots. He was the player of the year at Qb in Texas running approximately the same style offense and can make big plays. The Tigers are deep at Rb, but the position is open between Woods and Temple, but incoming frosh sensation Connell Davis is on the radar screen, and they are high on him to lead this fall. The nasty line replaces only 1 player and are solid and the Wr unit is decent, and deep at the tight end position as well. wide they should be able to put up some points and run it well with the depth they have, but an unproven Qb in a complicated principles is going to take some time here.

On defense the Tigers return 7 players and they should be able to make some stands this season, as they will be tough against the run, with a strong front 4, and some strong play at linebacker. David Overstreet at security is all-Big 12 material, and led the team with tackles in 2005, but he has no help as all 3 cover corners graduated. Expect opposing teams to expose a weak secondary this season, and Missou has to find some replacements quickly as not to get lit up early in games and be staggering to trade punches with the likes of Nebraska and Iowa State on offense. A 5-loss season is not out of the question, but with games against Nebraska and Iowa State on the road in consecutive weeks, and road trips to Texas Am and Texas Tech in back to back weeks as well, Brad Smith will be missed and the Tigers will struggle this season to get someone else bowl bid, after winning a bowl game last year against South Carolina Advent from behind by 21 points behind Qb Smith. A learning curve year this year and a brutal road agenda in store. They called for Pinkels job last year at times in Columbia, and that might be the case again in Tigerland, the natives are restless and belief they would maintain while Brad Smith's years there, so allot of pressure is on the coaching staff to get to a bowl again.

Colorado

After a ton of on field and off field scandals, Gary Barnett was finally fired, and Boise State head coach Dan Hawkins was hired. A great coach, but Colorado's problems are 2-fold. A new nasty system, totally separate than what they used to, and replacing a great Qb in Joel Klatt. Not a small task and the talent level, especially for this'd type of nasty scheme, is lacking and it is totally a rebuilding year for Colorado without question. They are excited about Buffalo football, they had over 60,000 in attendance for the Spring game, but the fact remains that talent is low and the new principles will take some time.

On offense there is a struggle at Qb right now, but it looks like Brian White gets the job, a drop back passer type, with Bernard Jackson close behind, as more of a scrambler type Qb, but in this nasty system, a pure passer is what coach Hawkins wants. This position is unsettled and could change, which is not a good plan with a new scheme. The Wr unit is above average and the tight ends are respectable, but the caliber of receiver needed for this spread offense is not on campus right now, although Dusty Sprague is capable of development some plays and will be the go to guy. A serious learning curve here, and I expect turnovers to be a large part of Colorado's problems in 2006. The running game is solid with Hugh Charles, who is a perilous back and will work well in this system. He is no doubt Colorado's biggest nasty threat behind an line that has to learn zone blocking, so hopefully they can open some holes to keep defense's honest.

On defense they return 6 starters, the power being the linebacker unit led by Jordon Dizon. The line is guess and inexperienced and the secondary is also guess but they do have depth and a solid cover angle in McKay. This team got destroyed 70-3 in the Big 12 championship, and lost to Clemson is a bowl game. After all that, and losing their best player and leader on offense, and their head coach, Colorado is not a contender in the Big 12 north this season and will look to the future. They trip to Georgia, Nebraska, and Oklahoma this year, I do not expect them to maintain in any of those games and have a losing season this season. A go against team on the road against a defensive team without question.

Kansas State

After Bill Snyder's turnaround of the century with the Kansas State Wildcats, his era is over, as he retired last year and in steps Ron Prince from Virginia, where he was the nasty coodordinator, and at age 36, and he has some big shoes to fill, with puny talent to work with in 2006 for his west coast scheme. A tough job to say the least, and they might be able to maintain with Colorado for the next to the bottom spot here with some luck. They have a chance to win their first 3 games against weak sisters, but a 6 to 7 loss season is not out of the ask here with games against Colorado, Kansas and Missouri all on the road.

A Quarterback ask between Meir and Webb will be answered this fall, both are talented in separate ways, but I expect to see Webb make the start, as he can scramble and make bigger plays. The Wildcats landed one of the best Qb's in America, from rival Nebraska at the last minute, and I expect Josh Freeman out of Grandview Missouri to make the top 3 here and be groomed to be a top Qb in the country, so seeing a true freshman at years end start will not surprise me. At running back, they have 3 guys led by Alsup and Clayton and are solid here. The line is inexperienced but good, they were nailed huge last year by injury, so expect them to be better, but unproven. A west coast style offense is going to be used and they have some good Wr's here, but the west coast offense is tough to learn and mistakes will be made, just ask Nebraska about that.

On defense the Wildcats have a few great players here with Archer at Lb and Watts in the secondary, both are all -Big12 type guys, but this defense returns 8 starters from a unit that allowed over 350 yards per game last year. The line is unproven and a weak point, and teams will be able to spread them out and run on them. This is a below average unit that will give up points, and with a new scheme on offense and a learning curve here, look for K-State to have a bad year in 2006, and a go against team in big games, as they naturally do not have the defense to keep them in games.
