You have the leisure to drive yourself to parties, school dances, high school football games and to drive your date to the movies or to the beach. The thing is now that you have the added responsibilities of car payments among other things, you also need to start making more money than you did last year. These are very tough financial times but if you look hard enough there are still some very good paying jobs out there.

For a 16 year old one of the best part time jobs out there is to be a waiter or waitress. Waitering jobs are some of the top paying jobs that you can get as a teenager and this is not because of the hourly wage which is ordinarily between and an hour. It is because of the tips that you can make over there. Good waitresses or waiters can ordinarily bring home between 0 and 0 in tips if they are good at what they do. When citizen come into a cafeteria to eat they are looking for a good meal but they are ordinarily looking for man that they can conversate with and man that can make them feel a minuscule good than they did when they first entered the restaurant. So in essence, your job is not only to furnish exquisite food aid to these customers but you are also kind of being a psychologist as you are catering to what makes them feel good about themselves. If a waitering job is a minuscule bit too high paced for you then I would recommend applying for a job at your local library as a librarian. Librarians ordinarily make between and dollars per hour but they are our a lot of off hours which will give you a lot of time to not only read your beloved books but to also do your homework and finish it up so that when you get home you will be able to have fun and hang out with friends. If your day is way too hectic for you been working at your local library is just the remedy for your peace of mind. By the time you have stopped working at your beloved library you will have become knowledgeable in many separate subjects as you will have lots of time to read many books.

Do you know about - Middle School Graduation Ceremony - What Songs to Play

High School Football Scores! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

There is a high possible for wholly mucking up the song choice for your child's middle school graduation ceremony. If you do not take the time and instead just for the lowest coarse denominator, you will find that there are many horrors that are just waiting to inflict themselves on your child's graduation ceremony. I also know that children at this stage will be heavily involved in favorite culture so they will want to have some pop songs among the mix that is being used on their graduation.

What I said. It is not outcome that the actual about High School Football Scores. You read this article for home elevators an individual wish to know is High School Football Scores.

How is Middle School Graduation Ceremony - What Songs to Play

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from High School Football Scores.

I remember when I was in junior high, my music taste was wholly different from my parents. Any way what I legitimately liked about them is that they were wholly understanding. They did not attempt to inflict their rather old fashioned musical tastes on me especially on such an foremost opening as middle school graduation. As a rule, the idea of an advertisement school is never a good idea for a middle school graduation. Any way favorite songs will be a good choice. You legitimately need something fresh and uplifting. Ordinarily citizen will agree with their classmates as to what will be the songs that they will play on each of their graduation ceremonies. After all it will be them who are doing the dancing at the middle school graduation party.

Religious songs are good if you live in a religious society but there are many situations when the parent is religious but the children are less enthusiastic, especially for the Jr. High graduation party. What you need to avoid is imposing your own religious views on your reluctant children, on this occasion. This can cause unnecessary tension at the graduation ceremony. The last thing that you need on a busy day is an annoyed teenager resentful ruining all the arrangements that you have considered organized. But at the same time if you let the children have their way you will need to rehearsal some control on the proceedings.

Let them make the decision and have their choice of song for their middle school graduation ceremony to fall to the child's individual decision. You know very well that the junior high school children are not very good at exercising discretion when it comes to the music they listen to. It can be very embarrassing if the children decide to put on a song that places great embarrassment on the house or says things that are totally against your system as family. Tell your child that there will be very many different citizen attending the graduation party and it is foremost to take their feelings into notice when you are choosing to stage the middle school graduation ceremony.

However there are parents who share the same tastes in music as their junior high children. This will make club quite easy because you will legitimately agree on the most basic things that sway the party. Ideally we would all like to agree with our children at the middle school graduation ceremony. The reality is rather disappointed because it is very hard to get to the ideal of a harmonious graduation ceremony. The alternative is to have some level of compromise in the club of the middle school graduation ceremony.

I hope you will get new knowledge about High School Football Scores. Where you can offer used in your daily life. Do you know about - How to Overcome Stress

High School Football Scores! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

We have all had our share of stress..

What I said. It is not outcome that the actual about High School Football Scores. You see this article for facts about a person want to know is High School Football Scores.

How is How to Overcome Stress

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from High School Football Scores.

I always was cynical towards habitancy who complained of experiencing misfortunes. I used to say that they do not have a confident attitude and anyone they anticipate comes to pass. "As a man thinketh, so is he."

But now I think differently. Some things can be learned only by experience. Some may be pleasant and some unpleasant. But it is essential to have both good and bad experiences.

Last year we lost our house in a fire. It was a terrible loss because the property was under insured. My wife and some of my friends questioned me as to why this disaster should happen to me, a confident person. I myself did not know why! But I knew one thing. all that happens to me happens for good. What good it will be and when it will be, I had no idea. I will have to wait and identify the good when it comes and be thankful for it.

Since the house that burned down was a single family home in a duplex zone, we decided to build a duplex. When we submitted the plan to City Hall, our architect found that we could build a three story triplex. So now we have a three story triplex which gives a beautiful view of the ocean and mountains. Freighters and cruise ships from all over the world anchor in front of our house, and sea birds and eagles provide us with endless entertainment. We also have an revenue from the other two portions of our house. Thus, the fire was a blessing in disguise.

If the fire had gutted less than 70% of the house, we would have had to heal the damage and would not be permitted to demolish the house and build a new one. The fire brigade was a slight slow to retort and that resulted in more than 70% of the house being burned. That slight delay helped us, though that was not the intention of the fire brigade

Needless to say, during this time we suffered a lot of stress.

All stress is created by mind and the capability to overcome stress is also created by mind. Some events can create very great stress and calamity.

First, let us look at some of the damaging consequences of stress. An actual incident was narrated by Father Jerome Morella de Sorento, an Italian missionary in the Congo. A young man spent a night with his friend. Agreeing to the tribal practice young men are prohibited from eating wild hen for breakfast. Unknown to the visitor the host ready a wild hen and served for breakfast. When the guest enquired, the host said that it was not a wild hen. A few years later the two met again. Again the host ready a wild hen for breakfast. Again the guest asked if it was a wild hen and the host replied "Yes." The guest refused to eat. The friend laughed and said why should you refuse to eat it now when you were perfectly happy to eat it last time you came. As soon as the guest realized that the morning meal that he ate a few years back was wild hen, he began to tremble violently and was dead in 24 hours.

What was the cause of his death? Was it the violation of the tribal custom? It could not have been for he did not eat the hen that morning and when he violated the practice few years before, nothing ill happened. It was the stress of the realization of his violating the tribal custom
a few years back.

Another example illustrating the deadly consequences of stress was written by Dr. John K.Williams, a member of the Board of the National relationship for mental Health. He wrote in his book, "The Wisdom Of Your Subconscious Mind", that a doctor was given permission to experiment on a criminal sentenced to death. The prisoner was blind-folded and told that he would be painlessly bled to death instead of going straight through the torture of hanging. He was settled on a table. The doctor made a small incision on his hand but not deep enough to cause any bleeding and a small stream of running water was allowed to trickle into a bowl as if blood were trickling form the prisoner's hand. The doctor made suggestions to the corollary that he was bleeding to death. In a short time the prisoner died showing all symptoms of cerebral anemia. Though he never lost any blood. Here again death was the corollary of stress created by his mind.

Dr. Holmes and Dr. Rahe of the University of Washington medical School, Seattle, interviewed many sick habitancy and found that their ailment could be connected to stress they had suffered during the two previous years. They came up with a check list of 43 items to which they gave numerical values. For instance:

For death of a spouse they gave 100 points

divorce 73

personal injury or illness 50

retirement 45

trouble with the boss 23

Christmas 12

They found that if our score in one year is over 300 points, we have a 90% occasion of falling seriously ill during the next few years. Homes-Rahe test is widely used for statistical diagnosis of the health of army personnel in the U.S.

It is now an admitted fact that 50% to 80% of all diseases are psychosomatic. Many cases of cancer are attributable to group stress. Ulcers, high blood pressure, arthritis, chronic back pain, skin disorders, headaches, allergies, upset stomachs, asthma, hay fever, impotence, insomnia, diabetes and alcoholism are determined to be stress related.

High school football players from families having stress problems are likely to suffer more serious injuries than those from other families.

But by anticipation we invite accidents to happen. Therefore, when stress comes, identify the stress but comprehend and be confident that some good is arrival and look out for that good that is coming.

When we cultivate this habit, stress will always end up as a benefit. Try it, expect it and see that it happens every time

In addition to worries about health and petty things, we have a long list of "what if's". For example, "What if my house is robbed when I am away?" You know the story of the woman who had 23 padlocks and 20 dogs to guard her for she feared she would be robbed, raped, and murdered. She spent sleepless nights in fear and trembling.

Some of us worry about what others think about us. If we knew how slight they concept about us, if ever they did, we would get over that worry in a hurry.

The lively fact is that though worry is the cause of so much stress, worry can be imaginary.

40% of your worries may never happen

30% of your worries are about events that have already happened and nothing can be done about them

10% of your worries are about petty things

12% of your worries are about your health or diet, your weight, etc. And will only aggravate the situation.

There is the story of the hypochondriac who went to see his doctor. When the hypochondriac was describing his imaginary diseases, the doctor was production short notes. The doctor was called away to retort a phone call. When the doctor was away, the hypochondriac peeked at the notes and saw the letters "Sob". He was very angry. When the doctor returned, the hypochondriac questioned him as to how dare he make such remarks about him. The doctor replied "First of all, my notes are my personal property and you should not have looked at them. Secondly the letters "Sob" stand for short of breath and not what you think.

All stress is not bad. medical investigation has fulfilled, that under-stress can cause depression, indigestion, overeating, chronic irritability, fatigue, inability to concentrate, and many more undesirable habits. Too much or too slight is not good.

Stress can be useful and necessary. If there is no stress on the strings, not a sound could be coaxed from the most beautiful Stradivarius and the extremely prized brilliant watch will not run for one slight but for the stress on its spring.

Too much tension, the strings of the violin and springs of the watch will snap and too slight will make them equally useless.

Some stress is useful by stimulating and strengthening us. What matters is not the event which creates the worry but how we view the event. An event that causes constant worry to one can be a very useful challenge to another.

When we look at the lives of great people, we find that their greatness depended upon their capability to overcome the tragic events in their lives and to turn them into events of blessings.

St Paul wrote the epistles in prison. Charles Kettering broke his hand while cranking an automobile and hence he invented the self starter. He had a sign in his laboratory, "Do not bring me your successes, they weaken me. Bring me your problems, they expand me."

As a boy, Edison worked as a candy butcher on the train in the middle of Port Huron and Detroit. One day he was late for the train and was running along to get on board. The conductor for real pulled him aboard by his ears. His eardrums were damaged and he lost 90% of his hearing. Edison claimed that his deafness helped him in that he could hear the loud ticking of the telegraph ticker amidst the chattering by habitancy which he could not hear. This deafness led him into the unexplored field of sound and its transmission. He patented 1100 inventions in the fields of sound and its transmission, photography, and electricity before he died in 1931 at the age of 90.

When we are under stress, our awareness, our senses, and our mind are sharpened. We all know many habitancy who work best under stress. But they do not permit stress to create anxiety in them.

There are many ways to deal with stress. Some of them are straightforward and are intended to get our minds off the object of stress. Some therapists advise transient remedies such as a warm bath, going for a walk, cutting the grass, baking bread, writing down your peeves, finding out what we are afraid of and so on. .

Getting our mind off the issue is good not only for stress but also in dealing with many other vexatious problems.

Some other tasteless ways of combatting stress are to take a join of tranquilizers, mix an alcoholic drink, smoke pot, eat, watch television, go to bed and cry, take it out on our dear ones but these responses will only land us in greater trouble.

There are three best methods by which we will be able to overcome stress.

The first recipe is to forgive yourself for the past mistakes you think you made. There are many habitancy who cannot get rid of their guilty feelings over such mistakes.

The famous writer, Guy de Maupassant wrote a story entitled "A Piece of String." It is the story of a man who saw a string on a busy shop place. He bent down and picked it up mental he could use it. He was accused of picking up a lost wallet and was arrested and put in prison. Fortunately, the wallet was found the next day. This man could not get over the insult and indignities he suffered. He brooded over it day and night. The piece of string had come to be an obsession. He neglected his work and went from someone to someone complaining of how he had been wrongly arrested and imprisoned. He died of a broken heart mumbling "A piece of string."

The piece of string became an obsession because he was finding fault with himself for having picked up the piece of string. If he had focussed on the someone who accused him and forgiven him, the obsession would not have persisted, for he would have had to forget the offence and forgive the offender.

A wise man once said that when a someone undresses for bed at night, he should also undress his mind from the mistakes and failures of the day. The art of forgetting is a virtue we ought to acquire.

Second recipe to eliminate stress is forgiveness of the offender. Forgive others for the offenses they have committed against you. We read in the Gospel "Forgive if ye have ought against any." Some habitancy say, "I can forgive but I cannot forget." Henry Ward Beecher, the famous American preacher at Brooklyn, New York, said "Such a statement is another way of saying that I will not forgive."

Benjamin Franklin said, "It is the lot of man to suffer. It is also his fortune to forget." and we forget because we must and not because we will.

Little vicious minds abound with anger and revenge and are incapable of feeling the pleasure of forgiving their enemies. You will caress the issue of strain, the leisure of body and mind when you forgive a person. You have no idea what great treasure lies in store for you until you caress it. For your own sake, for your own peace of mind, for your own health, for your own joy, learn to forgive.

The third recipe is to operate our brain waves. studying to operate our brain waves will bring great joy and pleasure . Meditation and yoga are the initial methods for studying to operate brain waves. Biofeedback also enables a someone to operate brain waves and thereby gain operate over stress.

Finally, when we crusade earnestly for the purpose of our lives and the Creator's purpose in creating the universe, with all the living beings with human beings in the top rung, with the highest power of deduction and induction among all, we will comprehend that the inventor was finding for companionship. The stresses we caress throughout our lives are challenges to make us strong and fitting companions for the Creator.

Do you know about - Reading Problems in Kids - How to Spot Reading Problems Early and What to Do About It

High School Football Scores! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

The biggest mistake parents make with their kid's reading is not trusting their gut if they theorize there is a problem.

What I said. It isn't outcome that the actual about High School Football Scores. You read this article for facts about that want to know is High School Football Scores.

How is Reading Problems in Kids - How to Spot Reading Problems Early and What to Do About It

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from High School Football Scores.

I made this mistake and I'm considered to make sure other parents don't make it too.

So based on my experience, interviews with other parents, and with literacy professionals, I've put together clues on how to spot reading problems early and steps to take to confirm if there is a problem.

Did you know that up to 20% of kids have dyslexia (a mystery studying to read)? Yet most teachers aren't trained on how to teach kids with reading problems.

It's often up to parents to spot reading problems in their kids. And the sooner problems are spotted and remediated, the great for the kid's education, self esteem and future.

When my son was in second grade, he quietly started refusing to do his schoolwork in class. He wasn't naughty or disruptive, he just wouldn't do it.

I plan he might have issues with authority or something so off we went to a child psychologist. We put together an incentive schedule to motivate him to do his work and he did.

Between first and third grades, I'd had concerns about his literacy - especially his writing and spelling. I'd met with his teachers numerous times asking about his literacy and was repeatedly told that he was fine.

In third grade, he did the mandatory basic skills testing and the results confirmed that all was not fine.

I was admittedly upset.

I wasn't upset with him. Or even the teachers. I was upset with myself. Because I'd known in my gut that something wasn't right. I just hadn't known how to confirm it. I think I had wanted to believe he was just a reluctant reader.

So I ultimately had confirmation that there was a problem, but I still didn't know what to do about it. We went to a national tutoring firm for an estimate and to start small group tutoring.

At the same time, our son had also been having outbursts of anger. So we went to a new child psychologist.   It was her work that considered the source of his anger was a studying difficulty. (Kids who are admittedly exciting but have studying difficulties can get very frustrated because they don't understand why they can't do the work other kids are doing).

We found a healthful literacy tutor to do a standard estimate and he began 1:1 tutoring for his specific difficulty. (The national tutoring firm we had been using was fine for tutoring gaps in knowledge but not trained to remediate reading difficulties!)  ultimately we had the help we needed and it worked.

The feel we had with our first son helped immeasurably with assisting our second son whose reading problems are more severe.

So here's what I've learned:

Clues to Help Parents Spot Reading Problems Early
Do the home reading each night with your kids. If you don't see a steady advancement in reader levels, talk to the teacher. Attitude - What is your kid's attitude towards reading? Is it negative? Does your kid read for fun? Does she excitedly bring home books from the library and then stop after a few pages? Does he complain of his eyes or tummy hurting or being tired when it's time to read? Behavior - Is your child exhibiting behavior problems? Kids can act up or withdraw to thwart attention from their reading problems (subconsciously of course!). Our older son had a lot of anger. Our younger son went straight through full assessments for Adhd but his behavior stemmed from audio processing and dyslexia. family history -  Look at family history. Is there a history of studying difficulties or dyslexia in the family? Don't just look at yourselves as parents. Look at uncles, aunts, grandparents and cousins. Trust your gut! If you think there is a problem, but everybody is saying things are fine, it's worth investigating further for your own peace of mind.
4 Things to do if You Think Your Kid has a Reading problem but You're Not Sure
Talk to the trainer - The first step is to talk to the teacher, but don't stop there. Many teachers have puny training on dealing with studying difficulties.  Get your kid's hearing and eyes checked. Literacy estimate - My strongest advice is to get an independent literacy estimate done. They aren't cheap, but if you get the right estimate done early, you will save so much time and money in the long run. And most importantly, if your child does have a studying difficulty, she can be helped before her behavior and self esteem suffer more. So where do you go? Not all tutoring companies furnish assessments that can identify a studying difficulty. In fact, many national companies are great for tutoring gaps in studying but not at identifying a studying difficulty. So go to companies that have master literacy resources and remediation for kids with dyslexia.  Don't be afraid to ask questions. Embrace the information, don't resist it. It took me a while to accept that my children had reading difficulties and that delayed me getting more informed.  I've spoken to scores of other parents who felt the same way.  It can be hard to accept "reading difficulty" or "dyslexia" as a "label". But denial won't help your kid. Information and the definite remediation will.
I've seen the impact of reading problems on behavior and self esteem first hand. I've known the frustrations of not knowing what to do for my sons. And I've talked to scores of other parents who've had the same experiences I've had.  Trust your gut! If you're concerned about your child's reading, have him assessed. There are frightful healthful resources available and they work.

Bollywood After 9/11 - The Depiction of Islam and the West in Indian Cinema

Since the dramatic events of 9/11, Bollywood cinema has shown an unusual interest in the terrorist film genre, especially as regards to international terrorism and global tensions between Islam and the West. Astonishing examples of this genre contain Kabir Khan's New York (2008), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan (2010), Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan (2009) and Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istanbul, to name a few. Films like Anil Sharma's Ab Tumhare Hawale Watam Sathiyo (2004) and Subhash Ghai's Black and White (2008) focus on terrorist issues within the Indian subcontinent itself. The latter films have continued in the tradition of pre 9/11 terrorist films like Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir (2000), Mani Ratnam's Dil Se (1998) and Bombay (1995). Ratnam's Bombay dealt with the devastating Hindu and Moslem riots in 1991, which cost over a 1000 lives. Chopra's Mission Kashmir dealt with a scenario of local terrorist operation in the Kashmir region sponsored by international terrorist cells working from Afghanistan. In this way the terrorist genre is not an entirely new genre in Bollywood, nor is terrorism an unfamiliar phenomenon in the day to day activities of the Indian subcontinent (the most modern and brutal terrorist attack was the Mumbai massacre in 2008). What makes the modern spate of terrorist films inviting is that they have entered the global sphere and have become part and parcel of a transnational dialogue between East and West and Islam and the other.

Bollywood After 9/11 - The Depiction of Islam and the West in Indian Cinema

To make the terrorist genre more palatable, Bollywood has traditionally spiced up the violence and suspense with the hallmark Bollywood song and dance interludes and sentimental romantic exchanges between the hero and heroine. Mission Kashmir is notorious for its graceful dances and stirring emotional exchanges between the main protagonists, played out on the violent backdrop of terrorism in Kashmir. Mani Ratnam's Bombay likewise mixes up the most brutal scenes of Hindu and Moslem hatred and violence with appetizing comedy and a forbidden love affair between a pious Moslem girl and a boy from a highly settled Shaivite Hindu family. His father is the trustee of the village temple and both the house patriarchs are violently opposed to the children marrying outside their caste and religious community.

Karan Johar's My Name is Khan

Following in the Bollywood tradition of mixing genres (known in the commerce as the masala or spicy recipe film), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan blends comedy and romance with the political hot potato of post 9/11 bigotry and racial hatred in the Us. The film's theme of ultra-nationalist extremism culminates in the senseless killing of a young Indian boy Sam or Sameer, who is beaten to death by youths in the football ground, in part due to the adopting of his stepfather's name Khan. Overflowing gushes of emotion and heart stirring romantic songs, such as the mixing of the 1960's counter culture anthem "We Shall Overcome" (sung in both Hindi and English), occur throughout the film to both lighten the tension and to exemplify the proximity of light and hope in a world darkened by the bitter shadow of global terrorism. The fact that the central protagonist Rizvan Khan is a pious Moslem, and politically neutral to the hysteria of the debate, is significant. Brought up by his mom that there are no fixed labels such as Hindu and Moslem, but only good and bad people, Rizvan Khan freely practises his religion with equal love and respect for all other races and creeds, only differentiating between what is in the hearts and minds of people, not to what religion they profess, or to what race, culture and nationality they belong.

My Name is Khan is also principal for Bollywood fans in that it reunites the biggest heart throb consolidate of Hindi cinema from previous decades, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. The duo was previously paired in two of Karan Johar's earlier blockbusters Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1995) and Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Both of these films were sentimental gushy romances, genuinely overflowing with juicy outpourings of emotion and feeling; a phenomenon which is termed rasa in India. The song and dance sequences were also very elaborately staged and combined a equilibrium of the former Indian music and dance forms (Hindustani music and former folk dances) as well as contemporary Western forms. This ensured the films' massive popularity in both India and diaspora countries like Canada, the Us and the Uk.

Karan Johar continues to utilise the Bollywood masala recipe in My Name is Khan, exploiting a sentimental and occasionally drawn out love affair between the autistic hero Rizvan Khan and his eventual Hindu wife Mandira, a proprietor of a thriving hair dressing salon in San Francisco (the "city of love" which symbolizes the 1960s counter culture movement exploited by Johar in the "We Shall Overcome" sequence). In the introductory scenes of the film, America is portrayed as the land of leisure and opportunity, the nation where all races and religions are given the possibility to move forward and perform prosperity and happiness in a way that is seen to be practically impossible in a country like former India, buffeted as it is with caste and religious prejudices and between half and two thirds of its citizen living in poverty.

For foreign nationals or Nri's (non-resident Indians), however, 9/11 radically changes this recipe and shatters the American dream nurtured for decades by an Indian diaspora which has merged its Indian cultural roots with American ideals of individual leisure and buyer prosperity. According to Johar's film, this is now the plight of the Khans who, instead of continuing to act as fully integrated members of the mainstream community, now suddenly find themselves on the periphery of a post-9/11"us and them" rhetoric, fuelled by an ultra-nationalist Republican President, who perceives the world in black and white realities, which have petite to do with the daily lives of the mean individual. It is no coincidence that it is the newly elected President Barack Obama (played by his look alike Christopher B. Duncan) who greets Rizvan Khan at the end of the movie and applauds him for his faith in God and his humanity and perseverance. For Karan Johar, Obama's choice is symbolic of the "us and them" divisions in the Us psyche being brought to a close along with the resumption of the innate ideals for which the American Republic and its citizen stand.

Before the nation's divisions are healed, however, the Khan's feel extreme personal hardships due to their ethnicity. These hardships culminate in the tragic death of their youthful son Sameer, beaten to death in the school playing field by racist youths. In her grief, Sameer's mom Mandira blames her husband Rizvan, accusing him of the fact that if she and her son had not taken the name of Khan, he would not be dead. She then tells him that the only way he can atone for this stigma of being a Khan and, by implication a Moslem, is to meet the Us President (at the time it is George W. Bush) and to tell him that: "My Name is Khan and I am not a Terrorist." This easy phrase becomes a kind of mantra throughout the film, powerfully confronting the viewer's post-9/11 prejudices by refusing to link the two concepts of Islam and terrorism together: i.e. My name is Khan, therefore I am a Moslem, but at the same time just because I am a Moslem, does this mean that I am a terrorist? Unhappily, while the hysteria that followed in the wake of 9/11 for many Westerners the two terms, Moslem and terrorist became pretty much synonymous.

This is a film therefore which, unlike its predecessors, is not only aimed at instructing Indians and West Asians (it broke all records in Pakistan), but is also aimed at educating and enlightening Westerners. This it does in a very subtle and didactic way, not only through its exploitation of customary West Asian icons, but also through its exploration of themes and images universal to the Us and the West: the 1960s counter culture, the plight of the coloured citizen in the South and references to the civil proprietary movement via the film's theme song "We Shall Overcome." This noted anti-establishment song from 1960s when sung in Hindi by a devout Moslem in a black gospel church gives the audience an practically surreal feeling of both merging and, at the same time transcending, national, racial and socio-religious cultural borders: a path to world brotherhood and unity which has been courageously expounded by two of the twentieth century's great spiritual leaders, India's Mahatma Gandhi and America's Martin Luther King.

Karan Johar thus draws upon both the Western ideals of freedom and individualism, as well as propounding the roots of West Asian religious piety and group solidarity. By doing this My Name is Khan proposes an alternate model of global brotherhood and transnational identities and exchanges. This new global model for Johar is one which draws its inspiration and ideals from the grass roots level- from the poor coloureds of Georgia, from the socially ostracised Moslems, and from the autistic and mentally handicapped. All of them are an integral part of this global humanity and in the end the form of Shah Rukh Khan, the biggest megastar in the global forum today (including Hollywood), speaks for all of them, when he says my name is Khan and I am not a terrorist, not an outcaste and not a threat to the Us or the principal values which it seeks to export to the rest of the world. Rather, as pious Moslems, those like Rizvan Khan have something of value to conduce to the Us and the West, and when those in power allow them to do so, the principal values which have made the Us great can not only be maintained but increased and broadened. On the other hand, ultranationalist extremist practises will only create more and more hatred and division, so that even those who have assimilated the American Dream will grow to become its most sworn enemies. This is the main theme of Kabir Khan's New York, which I will briefly discuss in part two of this article.

Kabir Khan's New York

Although not as thriving at the box office as Karan Johar's blockbuster, Kabir Khan's New York is maybe an even more inviting example of the transnational trend in the Bollywood terrorist genre. Released in 2008, New York focuses on the lives of three trendy young Indians studying at New York State University together. The usual Bollywood masala romance dominates the first half of the film, focusing on a sentimental love triangle between Maya (Katrina Kaif), Sameer or Sam (John Abrahams) and Omar (Neil Mukesh). Both Katrina Kaif and John Abrahams, as well as Irrfan Khan (playing the Fbi agent Roshan) are well established stars in Bollywood (Irrfan Khan also starred as the policeman who interrogates the main protagonist in Slumdog Millionaire). And the proximity of these stars, along with the solid musical score and the dramatic love triangle scenario, assured the film's success despite its controversial theme. Significantly, Sam and Maya fall in love and shatter Omar's emotional world at around the same time as the two hijacked passenger planes are driven into the Twin Towers. As with My Name is Khan, actual footage of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre is utilised in the film.

From this point onwards, a film which has been mostly centred upon a sentimental love friction between three friends now becomes a political indictment of the Bush administration's post-9/11 terrorist policies. Sam, as part of the Fbi's nationwide hunt for terror suspects, is arrested, incarcerated and tortured. These tortures are graphically depicted in the film and are apparently based on true life accounts of innocent victims, who have been illegally arrested and incarcerated for no other infer than their having the wrong ethnic background and religious persuasion. while the final toll a grim note to this follow informs the viewers of the facts that: "In the days following 9/11 more than 1200 men of foreign origin in the Us were illegally abducted, detained and tortured for as long as 3 years. The government did not find evidence linking a single one of them to the 9/11 attack...."

The central protagonist Sam or Sameer functions as a prototype for these 1200 men. Indeed, from being a totally assimilated American before his torture and arrest, Sam now becomes a Moslem Jihadi, fusing his hatred for the United States with that of terrorist cells in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East. His old friend Omar is recruited by the Fbi to spy on Sameer and his Hindu wife Maya and to crack open Sameer's links to international terrorist cells. Omar is coerced into betraying his friends at the threat of disappearing into the Fbi's custody and being tortured for months on end as Sameer had been. In this way, even if the film does not actively promote Jihad as a basic tenet of Islam, it does portray a sympathetic psychological profile of the terrorist mind-set. Sameer's friend Omar at last understands this also when he is given Sam's story and the barbaric nature of the ordeals he has had to experience and which have caused him to become an international terrorist.

Unlike Rizvan Khan, who has no qualms about informing the Fbi about the fanatic doctor Faisal's terrorist plot in My Name is Khan, New York's Omar is torn between his sympathies for his friend Sam/Sameer and the Us ideas of freedom and justice, which he sees as being seriously undermined by George Bush's invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and his repressive domestic policies in the Us, where under the Patriot Act basic individual proprietary and liberties of American citizens are apparently violated for no other infer than that they are of someone else ethnicity, culture and religious persuasion than the mainstream white majority. Omar, as the voice of infer and sensibility in New York, also represents the neutral observer, who is both within the ideas (he is educated at New York State University) and is outside it (he is an Nri national from Delhi living in the Us). He has also been in love with Sam's wife Maya but has tried to separate himself from these feelings, genuinely from feeling whatever at all. As such his decision to infiltrate his friend's terrorist group and take part in its Jihad is significant. Omar is an "undecideable"; he is unsure of his identity, unsure of his ideals and his loyalties. Eventually, he betrays Sam and his group and communicates Sam's plan to blow up the Fbi headquarters to the Fbi agent Roshan and the relevant authorities.

Despite promises from Roshan and the Fbi executive heads, both Sameer and Maya are shot dead by Fbi snipers while negotiations for Sameer's surrender. According to Kabir Khan's controversial film, this kind of Fbi brutality and overkill is symptomatic of the new post-9/11 ultra-nationalist America which, in its unrelenting quest to punish the guilty, also leaves in its wake the bloodied corpses of the innocent: not just Maya, but arguably also Sam himself. This is a theme which has been taken up courageously and sometimes uncompromisingly by Hindi cinema.

Another superior example of this uncompromising condemnation of post-9/11America occurs in Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan. Here, in an open conference university forum, the main protagonist Riyaaz condemns Us intervention in Afgahanistan and Iraq, claiming that the world's biggest terrorists are the white super powers. Riyaaz informs the ethnic white students present about clear uncomfortable realities in Us politics, such as the fact that the Taliban was a creation of the Cia and that more than 500,000 civilians were killed in Iraq. Much to the horror and consternation of the students present, Riyaaz concludes his speech by saying that "just because you wear a suit and call yourself President does not make you any less a terrorist." This is pretty bold stuff and seems to be reflective of the growing discontentment of clear Bollywood filmmakers towards a period in history where the West appeared to go totally wrong taking the downward path from humanitarian ideals of universal equality and democracy to policies of religious bigotry and totalitarianism.

Interestingly, although these themes have also been taken up by Hollywood, in films such as James Cameron's Avatar, they have been depicted in a less direct way. In Avatar, for example, the" shock and awe campaign" unleashed upon the indigenous inhabitants of the planet Pandora (clearly a reference to Bush's shock and awe campaign against Iraq), occurs in the context of an ingenious fantasy universe, where the brutality of corporate capitalism and Us neo-imperialist policies is downplayed in that it not only happens in the security of someone else continent, as with Iraq and Afghanistan, but occurs on someone else planet entirely!

The new Bollywood terrorist genre is therefore a more uncompromising and genuinely disturbing contribution to the global debate than films like Avatar. This is due to the fact that West Asian directors depict terrorist operation from the contemporary political standpoint, along with exploring relevant issues associated with the stigmatised cultural and ethnic group, which has been largely denied a voice in this debate ever since the 9/11 event took place. As has traditionally been the case in Indian cinema, the new Bollywood terrorist genre gives the Moslem minorities a voice, telling their story from the inside, making them branch and not object and narrating the plot from the perspective of their culture, religion and society base. In My Name is Khan, for example, Rizvan's sister in law Hasina is persuaded to remove her hijab (head scarf) after being attacked and having it forcibly removed by an unknown assailant. Eventually, she restores the hijab to her daily dress, including her lecturing job at university. Here she says to her students: "M y hijab is not just my religious identity. It is a part of my existence. It is me."

In Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan, the central protagonist Riyaaz is also instrumental in educating white university students about their preconceptions of Islam as a violent religion and the Koran as a scripture promoting Jihad. Riyaaz flatly informs the students that the word Jihad is in fact mentioned in the Koran only 41 times, but that the term mercy and compassion is mentioned 355 times. In this way, the film's viewers are also informed that Islam is predominantly a religion of compassion and peace and not violence and bloodshed, as right wing vested interest groups have led us to believe in the past decade or so.

It is these perspicacious insights from within the socio-religious roots of West Asian culture which makes Indian cinema, often dismissed in the West as sentimental and trivial, such a profoundly didactic medium from which audiences, especially in the West, can growth their scant knowledge about the science of mind behind Hindu and Moslem icons and spiritual practises. In an increasingly global world, where these icons and practises are continually crossing over and clashing with Western standards, this knowledge and awareness is not only relevant to us in the West, it is basic to our very existence.

Films like New York and My Name is Khan are an integral part of the teaching of that awareness.

Do you know about - When Harry's Brain Met Sally's - How Boys and Girls make

High School Football Scores! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

They're the sort of questions that countless parents have asked themselves at one time another. What makes our girls and our boys seem so dramatically distinct from one another? Is there a girl gene responsible for "sugar and spice and all nice" and a corresponding boy gene for "frogs and snails and puppy dog tails"? Or is it the environment -- those prim-and-proper tea parties vs. Those rough-and-tumble wrestling matches -- which pull the sexes in opposite directions from such an early age?

What I said. It is not outcome that the actual about High School Football Scores. You read this article for information about anyone wish to know is High School Football Scores.

How is When Harry's Brain Met Sally's - How Boys and Girls make

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from High School Football Scores.

Some of us have proper the differences in the middle of our girls and our boys as a given, many others have struggled against it, and not a few of us have wondered about our own hand in production it so. How essential is that first blue or pink jumpsuit in the life of a baby, the toy airplane mobile hanging above its crib compared with the beatific teddy bear beside it - and how much does all that estimate to when paired against the confluences and constraints of human biology? The Nature vs. sustain demand is one that has captured our attentiveness for centuries and continues to fascinate us to this day.

In inescapable circles however, it's a demand that can be dangerous to your expert health. Take the case of recently appointed senior White House economic adviser Larry Summers. When Summers last made national headlines, it was in 2006 as the first president in the preponderant 370-year history of Harvard University to be forced out of the school's chief administrative post. His sin was nothing quite as juicy or salacious as sexual indiscretions with a junior faculty member, plagiarism, or confidentially rooting for Yale's football team at The Game.

Rather, Summers committed the unforgivable academic crime of wondering out loud (at an economics conference, no less) whether the female and male brain might be naturally predisposed towards distinct types of thinking. Within a few hours of his presentation at the conference, the writing was already on the ivy-covered walls. His resignation was a foregone conclusion.

A Legitimate Question? academic politics not withstanding, though, the demand seems a legitimate one. There are clearly biological differences in the middle of men and women (vive la difference!), so might it not also be the case that the sexes think differently from one another?

The sparks unquestionably start flying when politics enter the mix. If we could scientifically prove that the mean woman were great than the mean man at performing inescapable reasoning tasks or vice-versa, would we consequently be locked into course decisions based on that knowledge, forever pigeon-holing the sexes into gender-specific roles?

The talk should be a resounding "No", especially when we remember that we are talking about averages. There is so much variability within the human population, male and female alike, that it would be very foolish to assign anything to a specific work based upon their sex, height, eye-color, or any other singular physical trait. Many would make the same conference concerning Sat scores - their predictive power for how man will accomplish in a specific profession or academic field are poor at best.

To feature the argument, let's take the case of male expert basketball. The mean height in the Nba is 6'6", and height surely does confer many advantages on the court. Based upon this singular physical characteristic, we might be tempted to expertly assign every male in America, 6'6" and taller, to the Nba. But what division of these titans are unquestionably good sufficient to play expert basketball? The talk is very few. On the other hand, there is no shortage of All Stars and Nba Hall-of-Famers who are much closer to the national height mean and a few that are below that average. No matter what the averages say, variability in many distinct human qualities makes stars out of seemingly unlikely prospects.

Back to brains. While the mean male and female brain are remarkably similar in structure, brain scanning and Mri technology have enabled us to notice some small but demonstrable differences in the middle of the two. For example, the mean male adult brain when compared with its female counterpart has a slightly larger cerebrum and a larger amygdala, a small buildings in the town of the brain connected with processing fear and emotion. The female brain contains thicker connective tissue that allows for more communication in the middle of the two brain hemispheres.

Could these very subtle structural differences cause discrepancies in the way men and women learn, laugh, and love - differences in the ways that a Harry and a Sally see and interact with their respective universes? And are these differences biologically predetermined, or are they changes that form over time -- the cumulative ensue of many years of whether "thinking like a man" or "thinking like a woman"?

Toy Trucks, Toy Dolls, Toy Guns Over the last half century, the trend in the scientific world has been to downplay innate brain differences in the middle of the sexes and to emphasize the role of socialization -- the notion that from an early age, girls and boys are taught how to think and how to behave straight through public situations. Agreeing to socialization proponents, community teaches boys and girls very distinct lessons and presents them with distinct models for approaching problems, so much so that over time, the mean male brain and the mean female brain form distinct preferences, concerns, and strategies.

That societal prejudices and pressures could be influencing the direction of our children's brain improvement has caused no lack of consternation among the progressive parenting crowd (many of whom grew up listening to and believing in Free to Be... You and Me.) Some of these parents have taken up the battle cry and gone full frontal assault against the socialization tide, attempting to shape their daughters into sword wielding, aggressive go-getters and their sons into more emotionally-open nurturers.

Friends of ours in Connecticut, die-hard conservatives no less, tell the story of how they decided to buy a toy truck and a toy tool set for their young daughter, in order to encourage her constructive play. Imagine their surprise when they found their daughter gleefully cradling the truck, cooing at it and calling it "baby", while lovingly using the toy wrench as a "bottle" for feeding. I didn't have the heart to ask them if she burped the truck and changed its diaper as well.

The case with boys is no less exasperating. Take for example the millions of "enlightened" parents who have attempted in vain to reign in their boys' fascination with guns. Miami Herald humorist Dave Barry, who once enacted a failed toy-gun ban in his own home, recommend in one of his columns that two boys abandoned together on a desert island with only their wits to help them survive would immediately begin production toy guns out of driftwood. Along these same lines, we very suggest this humorous and informative blog entry by Alice Bradley [http://www.alphamom.com/wonderland/2008/07/is_pretendshooting_acceptable.php] about 101 ways to "die" at the hands of your boy toddler.

The anecdotal evidence above, as well as a vast body of empirical evidence, suggests that boys and girls engage in very distinct modes of play -- modes that address the needs of their very distinct public worlds.

It's worth noting here that these stories call into sharp relief the use of the term "nurture", in the Nature vs. sustain debate. While the word "nurture" conjures images of a loving home environment that shapes our children's behavioral development, these stories suggest something else entirely: that socialization straight through peer groups may be much stronger than our concerted efforts as parents to mold our children's character. (This, in fact, is unquestionably the conference made by Judith Harris in The sustain Assumption, her biting and controversial critique of the field of developmental psychology.)

Autism and Male Brain system While over the last 50 years socialization has been the generally beloved explanation for differences in boy-girl behavior, modern studies have recommend that biology may play a larger role than was previously acknowledged. These come from an unexpected source -- studies on autism.

Enter Simon Baron-Cohen, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology and Director of the Autism investigate Centre at Cambridge University. (No, he's not the brother of Sacha Baron Cohen -- the comedic evil genius behind the characters of Borat and Ali G. -- he's his first cousin.) One of the world's most respected autism researchers, Baron-Cohen's team was the first to release investigate demonstrating that children with autism lack or have a greatly impaired system of mind - i.e. They have singular mystery in comprehension that another man can have an private perspective separate from their own. This in turn makes it very difficult for autistic children to read other people's emotions and form empathy towards them. system of mind impairment has since come to be widely proper as one of the proper diagnostic features of autism.

How does this spin to Harry's brain and Sally's brain? We mentioned before the subtle structural differences in the middle of adult male and female brains, but your typical Harry and Sally will accomplish differently at inescapable reasoning tasks as well. For example, Harry will score higher on-average than Sally on map-reading tests and tests that ask him to visualize 3-dimensional objects being rotated. Sally will typically score higher than Harry on inescapable tests of language ability, and recognition of other people's emotional states. Baron-Cohen has taken this and other evidence and condensed it into a very simple, reductionist and very controversial formulation that he published in his 2003 book The essential Difference: The Truth about the Male and Female Brain. He claims that the typical male brain is more adept at systemization, while the typical female brain has an affinity for tasks that wish empathy. (Does anything feel the ghost of Larry Summers in the room?)

In fact, Baron-Cohen has set the scientific world on its ear with his most recent system that autism is nothing more than a man exhibiting an extreme "male type" brain. This is based on their modern looking that among the parents of autistic children, there is a strong tendency for both the father and mom to have more systemizing brains than empathizing ones. These parents score very on systemizing tests and more poorly on empathy tests, indicative of strongly "male" cognitive bias. Roll the genetic dice and two such parents have a much higher opening of giving birth to a baby with an extreme male brain, displaying "a particularly intense drive to systemize and an unusually low drive to empathize."

This, suggests Baron-Cohen cautiously, may be the real cause of autism: a preoccupation with one type of brain operation -- one that enduringly seeks to dispose stimuli into rationally ordered patterns -- to the exclusion of another type of brain operation that involves language acquisition and comprehension that other citizen have distinct perspectives. The ramification is that autism -- as debilitating as it can be -- is not unquestionably a brain "disorder" at all, but the logical manifestation of a man being at the extreme, far "male end" of the brain continuum.

(For an elucidating conference of Baron-Cohen's theories by some of the world's important scientists, we very suggest this article in Edge.)

One other major discovery by this cutting-edge team of scientists. They have found evidence that the differences in male-female brain operation may exist as early as at childbirth. In a study of babies less than 24-hours old, Baron-Cohen and team found that when newborns are presented with a live human face alongside a mechanically bright mobile, the males spend significantly more time looking at the mechanical mobile than the females, who spend more time looking at the human face. This supports the hypothesis that baby boys are more attracted towards systemizing brain operation -- in this case recording and analyzing mechanical appeal -- while baby girls are more attracted to empathy-related activities -- searching for emotional expressions in the facial features of others.

While this much criticized study still awaits replication by an independent team of scientists and supplementary elucidation, it unquestionably bursts open a new door of inquiry into whether boy brains and girl brains might start developing in distinct ways before socialization ever has a opening to kick in. Score one (tentative) point for Nature.

What's a Parent to Do?

So where does this leave us parents, struggling to raise our kids the best way we know how? Is there a point to our trying to sustain our kids towards or away from society's expectations, or ultimately are our kids fated to be anything their genes have already decided?

Without being too preachy (or giving a definitive answer), we are firm believers that our children are innately blessed with a multitude of potential talents. From the very outset, their brains are wired to learn, learn, and then learn some more - and this is just as typical for girls as it is for boys. Both our girls and boys are blessed with a astonishing curiosity that drives them to enduringly examine and try to make sense out of their growing universes. That they tend to do so in distinct ways shouldn't trouble us or surprise us too much.

And while X and Y chromosomes may (or may not) predispose our children's brains towards fairies or super heroes, tea parties or swashbuckling adventures, the desire to learn new things enduringly exists. It is our job as parents and teachers to help unlock and feed that curiosity in as many distinct directions as possible: the sciences and music; poetry and math; sports and crafts; comedy and drama. The possibilities are as limitless as our children's minds are broad.

We encourage parents of young children, especially during the early grade school years, to vary their children's extracurricular activities. Give them as many opportunities as potential to examine some of their own potential talents and try to avoid locking them into any specific one at this early stage. And it is unquestionably here that it is important for parents not to be afraid to cross the gender divide. Interspersed with computers and football, you can encourage your boys to try out gymnastics or movement -- just call it something cool like capoeira. And for the girls, in the middle of the ballet classes and soccer institution encourage them to have their scones and tea over a stimulating game of chess or, if they prefer, the board game Risk. World domination is just a few rolls of the dice away.

It's not so much about defying society's expectations, but about giving our children the opening to learn as much as they can about themselves, to learn what sorts of activities they truly love doing. It's about tapping into their natural enthusiasm. It's about showing our kids that we believe in them anything they choose, and teaching them that they should believe in themselves, too. For when our kids believe in themselves and love what they're doing, there's no limit to what they can achieve.

And anything they eventually do choose, it's far more essential than that pink or blue jumpsuit, or the airplane mobile that once hung over their crib.
